Transportation and Mobility

Staff Back End Developer (Alg)

The Company

Our client’s mission is to make the freight industry better for all parties–shippers, carriers, and the environment. The solution is a guaranteed carbon-neutral service and it gives shippers top-tier shared truckload services while helping carriers maximize revenue through planning stops strategically and reloads conveniently, all through algorithms they’ve created. The larger climate-related goal is to eliminate inefficiency and waste. There is no need for a truck to drive halfway across the country half full, then all the way back empty which is the way it’s been done for almost 100 years. This client has been at the forefront of shaping the future of the shipping industry and is valued at over $1 billion, and it’s an incredible time to join the team!

Your Impact

You will be helping the algorithm team to fundamentally change the way freight moves through their business model that reduces carbon emissions with more efficient logistics solutions. You will work along the A, Infrastructure, and product groups to innovate on and optimize their proprietary pooling technology which is the heart of the entire platform.

  • You will improve and innovate on our client’s core automated costing and pricing engines, which form the foundational basis of their optimization
  • You will design and implement strategic decision-making tools to choose among the thousands of ways our client could choose to move their shipments
  • You will develop automated tests (unit, integration, performance) and write testable code
  • You will develop new functionality, application components, APIs, and infrastructure
  • Apply modern open source tools and frameworks where appropriate
  • Make recommendations regarding the development of new code, reuse or refactoring of existing code, and use of 3rd party and/or open source frameworks

About You

  • You have 5-10 years of experience as a software engineer architecting large-scale, mission critical, fault tolerant, multi-tier web applications
  • You have a track record of releasing highly scalable backend services in a SOA or microservice architecture
  • You are a strong (expert) Java Developer (ideally experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Python and Spring Boot as well)
  • You have experience using Git, modern IDEs and build/deployment tools (e.g. Maven, SBT, Docker)
  • You have experience using GCP, AWS, or equivalent IAAS and PAAS cloud services, containerized production deployments
  • You have an understanding of SOLID design, computational complexity, data structures, client/server architecture, scaling, design trade-offs
  • You have done database design and architecture: data modeling, warehousing, and NoSQL database concepts

Bonus Points

  • Experience working on pricing algorithms or engineering around these algorithms
  • DevOps background
  • If you come from a background/company where they have a two-sided marketplace
