Energy and Grid

Principal Researcher - Distribution Grid Systems Modeling

The Company

We’re partnering with the advanced R&D team of a global intelligent‑edge technology leader. This Boston‑based group blends deep signal processing, machine learning, communications, and circuit design expertise to accelerate the energy transition—especially modernization of the electric distribution grid. The team culture: high curiosity, rapid prototyping, tight collaboration, and turning research into deployed grid software.

Your Impact (Responsibilities)

  • Invent and implement novel algorithms & software for distribution grid modeling, control, and optimization (e.g., state estimation, dynamic pricing, DER orchestration, Volt/VAR, FLISR support)
  • Advance capabilities that enable higher renewable & DER penetration on distribution and transmission networks
  • Lead and contribute to prototypes and pilot deployments—driving concepts from whiteboard to operational trials
  • Integrate algorithmic insights with product and hardware teams; inform future system and silicon design via data analysis
  • Interface with operational grid platforms (ADMS, DERMS, GIS, FLISR) accounting for latency, data quality, and topology dynamics
  • Monitor emerging research, standards, and market/technology trends to guide roadmap decisions
  • Operate effectively amid ambiguity; mentor colleagues and elevate technical rigor

About You

  • PhD (or equivalent depth) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Computer Science, or related field plus ~5+ years applied industry or research experience
  • Proven track record designing and deploying algorithms for distribution grids (e.g., distribution state estimation, OPF, DER coordination, dynamic tariff or flexibility models)
  • Hands-on integration experience with ADMS / DERMS or related OT/IT systems; understand SCADA, telemetry quality, and operational constraints
  • Demonstrated end‑to‑end execution: research concept → prototype → pilot → operational product
  • Strong implementation skills (Python / C++ / Julia / Matlab or similar) and comfort with real-time or near‑real‑time performance constraints
  • Intellectual curiosity paired with bias for action and increasing technical scope
  • Clear, concise communicator able to collaborate across research, product, hardware, and external stakeholders
